Academics

We focus on helping students learn to use their minds well, emphasize depth over breadth to instill mastery of subject matter, personalize our teaching for our students and stress high expectations while fostering an environment that is conducive to learning.

We offer:

  • Daily blocks of 90 minutes of reading and mathematics instruction
  • Regular art, music, technology, and physical education classes
  • Small class sizes for individualized attention
  • Highly-qualified teachers with advanced degrees

John P. Parker School also offers four (4) pre-Kindergarten classes that are operated by highly-qualified teachers with more than 50 years of combined experience in teaching and learning. Each classroom has at least two adults to support instruction in the classroom. Students enter Kindergarten prepared for success.

We also pride ourselves on the fact we offer the College Preparatory magnet program that prepares students in grades 4-6 for success in the Special College Preparatory Program offered at the prestigious Walnut Hills High School and Gilbert A. Dater High School. Students are introduced to Spanish which will support their knowledge of vocabulary and proficiency in other foreign languages. In addition, students explore the scientific method and must complete research papers and hands-on projects at each grade level.

Tutoring

Be The Change, Strive — During the school day academic tutoring, beginning in the fall through spring for learners in grades 3-6. Community and corporate volunteers are matched with learners one day per week for 30 minute math and/or reading tutoring session. 

Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, Mentoring and Tutoring — Program that matches an adult mentor to learners in grades 2-6. This is a one year commitment with one hour weekly contact. Tutoring one day a week from fall to spring for 30 minute session to improve academic performance in the classroom.

Whiz Kids/City Gospel Mission — An after school literacy based, one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program that meets twice weekly for one hour sessions. In addition to academic tutoring, drama, art, dance clubs are also offered. Neighborhood churches recruit members to form the tutor mentor corps.
